Document Title
Problems Downloading Files from the FTP Site Including Client Access Service Packs
Document Description
If you have problems downloading files from the FTP site, this document contains some possible causes.
The Client Access service packs are an example of files on FTP. These service packs can be found on the Web site at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/access/casp.html which links to the FTP site at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/as400/products/clientaccess/win32. This document also includes additional ways that you can obtain the service packs.
If You Are Using Recent Versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer (5.0 or Later):
Look at the following Internet option:
Tools->Internet Options->Advanced->Browsing section. Look for an option called, "Use Web Based FTP". Depending on your version of the browser, this option may also be called, "Enable folder view of FTP". If the value is not checked, does your result change if you select it? If the value is already checked, does your result change if you deselect it?
Check with Your Internet Service Provider or Network Administrator
Problems downloading service packs from the FTP site are very often caused by a need for network configuration or browser settings changes. Users need to contact their network administrator or ISP. Here are some items to have them investigate:
| o | If you are prompted for a user ID and password when you try to access the FTP site from your browser: You may be blocked from certain types of access on the Internet, in which case your configuration would need to be changed to allow access to the FTP site. |
| o | If you are not allowed access to the FTP site: Again, have your network administrator ensure you are allowed to this site. Are there any firewall issues? |
| o | If you are timing out while downloading files: When you download a file with FTP, your browser communicates with the FTP server via a control connection while the data transfer takes place over a data connection. When a proxy server is introduced, your browser connects to the proxy server with both connections, and the proxy server then connects to the FTP server the same way. Some proxy servers will drop the control connection, or just stop paying attention to it if it has been idle for a given time. Of course, when you are downloading a large file, the control connection is idle. When our FTP server has finished sending all the bytes, it tries to send the 'end-of-file', which goes over the control connection. The proxy server never gets the end-of-file, so it assumes that the FTP server will be sending more bytes. Consequently, it maintains the data connection and control connection to your browser. So even though the whole file has been transferred and the FTP server has since gone on to do something else, the proxy server eventually times out the data connection. The time-out values in the proxy server are configurable to some extent. Contact your network administrator about this. |
| o | Do you have any changes in VPN implementation on your firewall? |
For Client Access Service Packs: If You Have Trouble Downloading the Full Service Pack .EXE
| o | For Client Access Express for Microsoft Windows: The service pack is divided into smaller component packages. These components and a readme file can be found within the FTP download site in the directory called SUBCOMPS. For example, here is the directory for V4R4M0 service pack SF60796: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/as400/products/clientaccess/win32/v4r4m0/servicepack/sf60796/subcomps/ See the README.1ST file within the SUBCOMPS directory for install directions. |
| o | For Client Access for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NTŪ: For V3R1M2 and later releases, the service pack is divided into diskette-sized images. Then you can either install the service pack from your hard drive or you can create installation diskettes. The diskette images and README file can be found within the FTP download site in the directory called DISKETTES. For example, here is the directory for V3R2M0 service pack SF62608: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/as400/products/clientaccess/win32/v3r2m0/servicepack/sf62608/diskettes/ See the README.1ST file within this directory for install directions. |
Other Methods for Obtaining Client Access Service Packs
| o | Use the SNDPTFORD command to order the PTF and install it on your AS/400e or iSeries 400 server. Since the service pack PTFs generally exceed the size limit to be sent electronically, you can receive the PTF on media by changing the "Delivery Method" (DELIVERY) parameter on SNDPTFORD to *ANY. (The parameter defaults to *LINKONLY.) |
| o | Use Internet PTF Delivery (Fix Central). To find out about this service and the requirements, go to the following Web site: http://www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries/support/ From the left menu, select Fixes, Downloads, and Updates. |
