Document Title
Native File Backup and Restore Options and Restrictions for Windows Server 2008
Document Description
Symantec Backup Exec is currently the only product supported/tested in the iSCSI Windows Server 2008 environment. Use of this product is also supported only to virtual tape on IBM i and not to physical tape devices on IBM i. See the Virtual Tape topic in the Information Center for information on setting up the virtual tape environment on IBM i.
Secondary backup and restores to Windows Server 2008 (utilizing physical IBM i tape devices) can be done; however, this requires a two-stage process of copying to and from virtual tape on i to the physical i-attached tape drive/library.
General Notes:
| o | From IBM i, the DUPTAP (duplicate tape) command can be used to copy data to and from virtual tape to physical tape. If you have a tape backup on physical tape, you can use the DUPTAP command to duplicate (copy) that tape to virtual tape and restore it from there. For additional information, refer to the Duplicate Tape (DUPTAP) command in the Information Center. |
| o | Virtual tape backup and restore is limited to 1 terabyte maximum (dynamically allocated). |
| o | Secondary backup and restore to any IBM i physical tape device must limit maximum block size to 32K (which should be common to all physical device types). |
| o | A suggestion to help minimize wasted DASD space is for individual image catalogs to be deleted following the transfer to physical tape. |
| o | Device locking for Windows Server 2008 Core installations requires the use of the command line interface when allocating the shared device to the Windows server. Details of the command line interface are documented the Microsoft Windows Batch Commands for Controlling Devices technical document. |
