Upgrading the HMC from Version 6.1.3 and Earlier to Version 7.3.4

Document Description
This document provides instructions to upgrade the HMC from Version 6.1.3 and earlier to Version 7.3.4 using media.

Prerequisites
If the HMC manages any POWER5 system(s), the firmware on the server(s) must be at SF240_299 or later.

Ensure the following prerequisites are met prior to the upgrade:
As part of the upgrade, IBM recommends that you order feature code 0962 from your IBM business partner or marketing representative. This is not required for the upgrade or the support of Version 7; however, it updates the IBM marketing records with your HMC version information.

HMC Version 5 and earlier
Upgrade the HMC to 6.1.3 including additional corrective service PTF MH01127. Note: Install any missing fixes prior to installing MH01127 as directed in the document.

HMC Version 6.1.0, 6.1.1 and 6.1.2
Update the HMC to 6.1.3 including additional corrective service PTF MH01127. To update from Version 6.1.x to 6.1.3 refer to Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document 449683734, HMC Update from Version 6.1.0, 6.1.1, or 6.1.2 to 6.1.3. HMC Version 6.1.3
MH01127 must be applied before saving the upgrade data.
1. Apply PTF MH01127 to enable the ability to upgrade to HMC 7.3.4.0. To apply MH01127 refer to Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document 449683734, HMC Update from Version 6.1.0, 6.1.1, or 6.1.2 to 6.1.3. Note: Install any missing fixes prior to installing MH01127 as directed in the document.
2. Upgrade to HMC 7.3.4.0 by means of the HMC V7R340 Recovery media.


If the HMC has not been rebooted recently, reboot before you begin the upgrade.


Download and burn HMC .iso images or obtain HMC media from IBM
Choose one:
.iso images
Do the following to obtain HMC 7.3.4 .iso images

Step 1: Download the HMC Version 7.3.4.0 Recovery DVDs: HMC_Recovery_V7R3.4.0_1.iso and HMC_Recovery_V7R3.4.0_2.iso.
Step 2: Burn the Recovery images to DVD-R media.


Save Upgrade Data and Upgrade HMC to 7.3.4 (from Recovery Media)
A Save Upgrade Data task must first be done to preserve information on the HMC before performing the upgrade. You must upgrade immediately after the Save Upgrade Data task. If you restart the HMC again without doing the upgrade, you must log in and run the Save Upgrade Data task again before performing the upgrade.

Do the following at the HMC interface to upgrade the HMC by means of the Recovery DVDs:
1.Select Licensed Internal Code Maintenance, then HMC Code Update
2.Select Save Upgrade Data.
3.Insert a formatted DVD-RAM media into the DVD drive.
4.Select the DVD drive, click Continue, and then click Continue.
5.Wait for the Save Upgrade Data task to complete. If the task fails, contact your next level of support before proceeding. If the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, the following optional procedure can be performed to verify the data:

a Open a restricted shell terminal as follows:

1 Select Right click on desktop
2 Select Terminals, then rshterm

b Run the command mount /media/cdrom.

c Run the command ls –l /media/cdrom.

d Verify that there are five tar files with the following names:

ACMSaveData.tar
RSCTSaveUpgrade.tar
SaveCCFWUpgradeData.tar
SaveHSCSystemUpgradeData.tar
SaveProfileDataUpgrade.tar

If any of these tar files are missing, contact your next level of support.

e Run the command umount /media/cdrom.

Note: The Save Upgrade Data will be saved to the hard drive on the HMC as well as the DVD-RAM. The Save Upgrade Data on the DVD-RAM is used only to recover from an unexpected error under the direction of support personnel.
6.Once the Save Upgrade Data task is successful, remove the DVD-RAM, insert V7.3.4 recovery media MH01147 volume 1 (which was ordered from IBM or downloaded and burned to DVD as indicated above) into the DVD-RAM drive, select the Console menu option, and then select Exit.
7.Click Exit Now to display the Exit Hardware Management Console window.
8.Click on dropdown arrow, click to highlight Reboot Console, and click OK.
9.The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window. Select Upgrade, and then click Next.
10.Select Upgrade from media, and then click Next.
11.Click Finish to start the Upgrade process.
12.When the first media is complete, the following options are displayed:

1 Install additional software from media
2 Finish the installation at a later date

Make your selection.
13.Select Option 1, and then press the Enter key to continue the upgrade. The following prompt is displayed:

Please insert the media into the drive and press Enter.
14.Remove the first DVD, insert the second V7.3.4 Recovery Media DVD (volume 2) into the DVD-RAM drive, and then press the Enter key to complete the Upgrade. The HMC restores the data preserved by the Save Upgrade Data task, and then completes the booting process. During this process you are prompted to select the language and keyboard mapping.
15.At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in using your user ID and password.
16.Review and Accept the License Agreement for Machine Code two times to complete the HMC 7.3.4 code update.

Install the required fixes for 7.3.4:
Follow the instructions to get the corrective service and updates applied by referring to Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document 509296117, Update(s) for HMC 7.3.4.
