Abstract
PC5250 LICENSE ERROR ON RECONNECT AFTER LOSING CONNECTION
Error Description
** Last updated May 12, 1999 **
Problem
-------
If the connection to the AS/400 is lost while using PC5250,
PC5250 may not be able to reconnect to the AS/400 when the
connection is re-established. PC5250 will display the following
error message:
PC5250 License Error
CWBCO1003 - Winsock error,
function send() returned 10054
Circumvention
-------------
The problem is caused by the License Management function not
correctly releasing the socket prior to reconnecting.
The socket is correctly released when the license is released
on the AS/400. However, to help improve performance on
subsequent license requests, the license is not released
immediately when PC5250 or File Transfer disconnect or
terminate. The default length of time to hold the license open
is 10 minutes. In order to circumvent this problem the
license must be released prior to reconnecting, this can be
done in a couple of ways:
First, if you had any File Transfer sessions running to the
AS/400 that lost communications, close those sessions. Also
close any PC5250 session that did not automatically
disconnect when communications was lost.
Then do one of the following:
1. Wait until the license is released, default 10 minutes. This
time out value can be changed as follows:
- Open the "Client Access Properties" icon located in the
"IBM AS400 Client Access Express" folder
- Select the "Other" tab
- At the bottom of the property sheet there will be a setting
called "Release license after:" Change this value to
something less than 10 minutes. 0 is an acceptable value,
in which case the license is released immediately.
Note: Making this value smaller, even 0, will have little
impact on start up performance, if you already have
successfully requested a license. Once the license
management function has successfully retrieved a license
from the AS/400, all subsequent license requests are
performed asynchronously and the license check is
performed in the background while PC5250 or File Transfer
is allowed to continue without waiting for the results of
the license check. If the license has been released, then
the license will be requested from the AS/400 again.
While additional processing will be required to check
the license on the AS/400, this processing is done in
the background and should not impact the start up or
connection performance of PC5250 or File Transfer.
2. Release the license manually:
- Re-establish communications with the AS/400 system.
- Open the AS/400 Operations Navigator.
- Select the system which you lost communications to.
- Right click to open the properties for that system.
- Select the "Licenses" tab.
- You should see the status of the license.
- If the status is "In use", then you have a
session that has not released its license. Close
any File Transfer sessions or PC5250 session that were
not automatically disconnected when communication
was lost.
- If the status is "Not in use", then you may reconnect
your PC5250 sessions to that system.
- If the the status is "Not is use - Available to release"
then press the "Release License" button. You then may
reconnect your PC5250 sessions to that system.
- Close the property sheet, by pressing OK.
- Repeat these steps for each AS/400 that the PC lost
communications with.
- Close AS/400 Operations Navigator.
