Abstract
POTENTIAL MENU LOCKING PROBLEM AFTER UPGRADING TO V5R3
Error Description
When upgrading to V5R3, message file (*MSGF) conversions
are needed. These conversions occur when the *MSGF is first
used and require an exclusive (*EXCL) lock on the *MSGF.
For heavily used *MSGFs, for instance S/36 Environment menus
and *DSPF menus that are based on *MSGFs, this conversion
may not occur due to the inability to get an *EXCL lock as
multiple jobs are using the same menus/*MSGFs. In this
situation users will see delays or hangs after selecting a menu
option as the system attempts to lock the *MSGF and is unable
to. The requested menu operation will proceed after waiting
for the default wait time of the job but, as the conversion was
not done the next menu option selected will again cause the
system to attempt to perform the conversion (and see the
delay/hang).
This conversion is only done once per *MSGF and the WRKOBJ
command with an object type of *MSGF can be used to determine
if the conversion has been done or not. Select option 8
(Display description) and look at the Optimum space alignment
attribute. If the value is YES the conversion has been
completed.
There are a couple approaches to avoid this situation. Ensure
that there are no other users of the menu/*MSGF and do one of
the following:
1. Select one option from each menu
2. Write an application program to retrieve any message
identifier (even one that does not exist) from the *MSGF.
The program can use the RTVMSG CL command orQMHRTVM API.
